According to rumors, Apple is gearing up to introduce its new microLED Apple Watch Ultra soon. The “Ultra” is about to become more premium with the new display kind. To those unaware, the microLED comes as an evolution when compared to OLED. It will boost the quality of displays with more brightness and efficiency. Also, the micro LED displays won’t suffer the same burn-in issues that we often see in OLED panels. The Apple Watch Ultra will open the doors for this tech in Apple’s ecosystem of products. These are great news for Apple fans, but apparently, they will need to wait a little bit longer.
microLED Apple Watch Ultra will take more time to come
Unlike previous rumors pointing to the launch of the microLED Apple Watch Ultra in 2024, it seems that this tech will come only in 2025. That info comes from display analyst Ross Young. He claims that the new info comes straight from Apple supplier Osram. In its latest Q4 2022 earnings call, Osram states that it plans to begin reporting revenues from microLED tech in 2025. As per Ross Young, this info pertains to a future microLED Apple Watch.
Gizchina News of the week
So far many rumors have been confirming the Apple Watch Ultra with microLED display. It’s not a surprise to see Apple debuting this tech on the Watch. After all, it has a compact display and hence it’s the perfect product to test its capabilities with the new technology. In the future, Apple may even bring microLED iPhones. The analyst Jeff Pu has been pointing to the release for 2024, but with Osram’s latest statement, Young points to the launch for 2025.

Unfortunately, the analyst did not provide info on this display. The previous information suggests it will come with a 2.1-inch panel which is large for a watch. To those unaware, the current Apple Watch Ultra features a 1.92-inch display, so the 2025 model will increase the size. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 8 has a 1.77-inch diagonal.
Apple will likely evaluate the technology with the 2025 Apple Watch Ultra. In a few more years, we can see this technology reaching more of the company’s products. In fact, the microLED is a new emerging tech that manufacturers are working to perfect. There is still room for improvements in the tech, and the manufacturers will likely use the upcoming years to improve it. Until then, OLED will still be the mandatory tech across flagship devices.
The microLED tech uses microscopic LEDs that form pixels. They offer accurate colors, high contrast ratio for HDR. There are better viewing angles and a smaller chance of screen burn-in. It also has low latency for higher FPS support and reduced energy usage efficiency.
