How to Remove Waterproof Mascara
I’ve never been a diehard fan of waterproof mascara because removing it can be very tricky. After the removal process (yes it is a process), I’m left with a burning sensation or red, irritated eyes from the constant rubbing and pulling. What’s even worse? Finding a few eyelashes on your fingertips and all you want to do is scream. Who can deal after that?
I don’t totally dislike waterproof mascara. I just prefer to not use it as much because of the removal process but not anymore. You’ll find out why as you continue to read.
Here are some of the great things we all love about waterproof mascara:
- less to no smudging (depending on the brand)
- lush, thick eyelashes
- adds volume
- worth it for hitting the pool or super sweaty days
Now here are things we generally dislike about the waterproof mascara removal process:
- irritates the eyes
- may accidentally remove eyelashes
- develop a burning sensation
- can cause an eye infection. YIKES!
Now, I’ve come across all sorts of methods to remove waterproof mascara. Here are 3 common methods below.
Method #1: The Facial Cleanser
A facial cleanser is one of the most easiest and laziest ways to remove waterproof mascara.
Positives
- Easy method
- convenient
Negatives
- can dry out lashes
- can be too harsh for eyes and surrounding skin
- can leave your eyes stinging
Method #2: Vaseline aka Petroleum Jelly
This is actually a great method and a method I’ve used in the past.
Positives
- cheaper alternative
- fast and effective
- lash conditioner
Negatives
- too greasy
- linked to being a carcinogen (I’m no scientist so, read this article if you have mixed feelings on PJ- Does Petroleum Jelly Cause Cancer?)
Method #3: Olive Oil
Olive oil is an all-natural solution and can be used as a good quality mascara remover.
Positives
- Organic so it’s good for the environment
- it’s gentle
- great for people with sensitive skin
Negatives
- Often times leaves a “gooey” feeling around the eyes (I personally hate that!)
So, what’s my #1 recommendation to remove waterproof mascara effectively?
Answer: Finding an excellent waterproof eye makeup remover. In fact, I found one!
My ultra favorite remover is Sonia Kashuk “Remove” Eye Makeup Remover ($9.99). It’s one of the most effective waterproof mascara remover I’ve come across in a long time and I’ve tried a lot. It’s gentle and can easily remove all traces of the waterproof mascara with ease. It’s perfect for people with sensitive skin too!
Where: Target stores and Target.com
Here’s what you’ll need to remove waterproof mascara:
- cotton balls
- waterproof eye makeup remover
- cotton swabs (qtips)
- a towel
Step #1
Grab a cotton ball and saturate it with the eye makeup remover.
Step #2
Close your eyes and place the cotton ball underneath your lashes and hold it there for 10 to 15 seconds (this will help soften the mascara).
Step #3
Slowly move the cotton ball upward to remove the waterproof mascara from your lashes. Repeat until you’ve cleaned every lash.
Step #4
Grab a cotton swab and dip it in the waterproof eye makeup remover.
Step #5
Use the swab to remove any traces of mascara left over. Stroke downward and slowly roll the swab around to use every inch of it. MAKE SURE TO NOT RUB!
Step #6
Rinse eyes with lukewarm water and grab a face towel to pat dry.
Like I said earlier, trying to remove mascara especially when it’s waterproof is a process but, totally worth it in the end!
